COLLEGE PARK AQUATIC CLUB PRELIMINARY TEAM INFORMATION FOR 2010 SEASON Practices – We anticipate the use of the Honey Bee Golf Club swimming pool again for this season. The initial meeting will be held at Honey Bee on Thursday, May 27th from 7-8 PM for all swimmers. We will not get in the pool the first night, but will have the coaches introduce themselves and put some information out about this year’s team. Also, there will be a parent’s orientation held while the coaches are talking to the swimmers. The first actual in-water practice will be Tuesday, June 1st. Here is the regular practice schedule: June 1st-17th (Mon - Thurs, should attend minimum of 2 out of 4 practices) 6 & unders and 8 & unders – 7-7:40 PM 10 & unders and 12 & unders – 7:40-8:20 PM 14 & unders and 18 & unders - 8:20-9 PM June 21st-July 15th (Mon - Thurs, should attend minimum of 2 out of 4 practices) 6 & unders and 8 & unders – 7:30-8:10 PM 10 & unders and 12 & unders – 8:10-8:50 PM 14 & unders and 18 & unders - 8:50-9:30 PM Regular Swim Meets – All regular meets will start at 8 AM. For home meets, please be at the pool ready for warm-ups at 7:15 AM. For away meets, our warm-ups will start at 7:30. Please show up even if the weather looks questionable. Every meet has to be completed, and to try and complete a meet during the week becomes a challenge. We won’t endanger anyone, but may ask you to wait inside a building or your car for a storm to blow over so we can complete a meet on Saturday. We need to complete at least 38 of 69 events to possibly call the meet final. Most meets end by 12:30 PM. The events for your swimmers will be posted on the website the night before and also on a bulletin board when you arrive. Every effort will be made to have each swimmer swim the maximum number of events they are capable of, and that the league allows (3 individual events and 2 relay events). Some swimmers may also be asked to swim in a higher age group on occasion to help the team get points. We will have three away meets and two home meets. Here is the schedule: Sat, Jun 19 - Away swim meet @ Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club Sat, Jun 26 – Away swim meet @ Norfolk Yacht & Countrry Club Sat, Jul 3 – Home swim meet vs Greenbrier Country Club Sat, Jul 10 – Away swim meet @ Oceana Sat, Jul 17 – Home swim meet vs Larkspur Swim & Racquet Club Sat, Jul 24 – Division Championship Swim Meet @ Honey Bee Golf Club pool Sat, Jul 31 – All-Star Championship Swim Meet @ TBD Registration – Registration is $85 per child (max $220 per family) and will include t-shirt, swim cap, picture and trophy. Swimsuits – We plan to offer the same swim suits as we did last year. Those suits are a solid color (royal blue) suit from the Dolfin Company. They offer two styles of girls suits (small and wide shoulder straps) and both briefs & jammers for boys. Suit information will be included with the registration forms. It is highly recommended that you attend one of the pre-registration sessions as the suits will be available to try on and purchase. Speedo suits (also solid royal blue) are also available, but I will not stock them and I must order them from Aqua Wear. Female suits will cost approximately $44-$48 depending on style and size, and the male suits will run approximately $25-$30. Contact the Team rep if you are interested in purchasing a Speedo suit. Team Representative – Kevin Nicholas, home 523-2125, cell 647-2616, e-mail – cpac@cpacswim.com , work – nicholak.contractor@cotf.navy.mil Co-Team Representative - Rip Montague, home 482-6796, cell 335-0729, e-mail - rmontague@cox.net Head Coach – Juliet Adams, cell 580-4428 , e-mail - strokefocus@gmail.com Parent Volunteers – We can’t run the team without parent volunteers. This is where we can use the help: - The date for the Swim League to hold their Parent’s Swim Clinic is Saturday, June 5th from 8:00-11:00 AM at the Green Run Clubhouse Pool (http://www.vbsl.net/GR_Clubhouse_Directions.htm). The Referee and Starter Clinic is held from 8:00-9:00 AM, followed by the Stroke & Turn Judge Clinic from 9:00-11:00 AM. If you could go to both sessions that would be great. It doesn’t matter whether you have any previous experience judging swimming. This is a great way to learn how the meet is run and how strokes & turns are judged for your children. Note – there will be a make-up clinic on Wednesday, June 10th. The location for the make-up is anticipated to be at Mallory Country Club at 6 PM. IF THERE IS ANY WAY YOU CAN POSSIBLY ATTEND, IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. - Scorers and ribbon writers. During a swim meet, four parents from each team volunteer to help keep track of the event scoring, and prepare the ribbons for the kids. If you are interested in learning how to run the computer system, please see Kevin sometime the first week of practice. Other help we will be asking you for during the week before a meet: - Timers – we will need 9 people each meet to help time the events, plus a head timer for home events. - Concessions – we will ask everyone to bring in items to sell, and some of our parents to assist at the concession stand for our two home meets and the divisional swim meet. - Parking – to help control parking at our home meets, we will ask for two parents to monitor the parking lot for the hour prior to the start of the meets. - Runners – we will ask for four people to run event and disqualification cards during the home swim meets. - Clerk of Course – we will ask for three people to help coordinate the swimmers so they know where and when to be for their event. - Announcer – for home meets we need one announcer to let everyone know which events we are getting ready for and other administrative announcements. Swimmer File Box – There will be boxes at every practice with a file for each swimmer. We will use these files to distribute newsletters, ribbons and other information. Please check this file at every opportunity. Tell the Coach/Team Rep Book – If for some reason your swimmer(s) will miss a practice, or more importantly a meet, we need to know as far in advance as possible. There will be a book next to the swimmer file boxes at every practice for you to note the dates the swimmer(s) will not be available. Please….make this the one official way to let us know about the status of your swimmer(s). Each swimmer has an individual page in the book. Time Trials – To get a better idea of where to enter our swimmers in the meet, we will do time trials on Thu, June 10th right after we finish the team picture. Swimmers will swim both freestyle and backstroke. I will need 12 parents to assist in keeping track of swim times. For this particular practice, ALL SWIMMERS need to be at the pool at 7 PM. Meet Entries – We do the best we can to enter swimmers in as many events as possible. The maximum is 3 individual and 2 relay events per swimmer, but that depends on the number of swimmers we have, the size of the pool we are swimming at and the ability of a particular swimmer. I will post the swim meet entries on the website on Fri evening before the meet. There will also be a team bulletin board at each meet. Please check that bulletin board when you arrive at the pool as sometimes last minute changes are needed. CASHOLA – We anticipate shifting the CASHOLA events from the Providence Square Wendy’s to the Wendy’s on Princess Anne Road right across from TCC this summer. After every regular meet we meet there for lunch right to distribute ribbons and announce the final score. In return for patronizing them, Wendy’s gives us a percentage of what we spend back at the end of the year. Team Pictures – We will hand out team t-shirts and will take the team picture at 7 PM on Thu, June 10th at Honey Bee. We will be doing our own pictures and the cost for this was included in your registration. Each swimmer will get a team picture and an individual picture in a memory mate holder. We will take the swimmer’s individual pictures during the first 2-3 weeks of practice. Divisional Swim Meet – Based on performance times, about 50-60% our team will be selected to swim against the other 5 teams in our Division at the Divisional Swim Meet to be held Saturday, July 24th. Swimmers will be notified by Sunday, July 18th if they were selected. Generally, the swimmers with the two fastest times in an event will be selected, along with members of the relay teams that had the best times. There may be some adjustments to the selections based on the maximum number of events a child can swim and availability of the swimmers. End of Season Party – will be held on Mon, July 26th at 7:30 PM at the Honey Bee Pool. Trophies will be given out to all swimmers, pictures will be distributed and special recognition awards will be handed out. Details about this event will be provided at a later date. Ocean Breeze Fun Day – For those interested, we will go to Ocean Breeze Water Park on Thursday, Jul 29th. Information on how to obtain water park tickets will be provided later. All-Star Swim Meet – Those individual swimmers that hold one of the top 14 times in any of the swim events held during the four Divisional Swim Meets, and the top twelve relay teams will be eligible for the All-Star Meet. We hope your swimmer(s) will have a great season. The goal is to ensure we have fun and to stress that personal improvement is the real key to success. If your swimmer(s) enjoy the sport, there are several year-round swim teams, as well as a winter swim league sponsored by the Virginia Beach Recreation Centers that we can give you additional information about. |
